In the story, “The Adventures of the Speckled Band” written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, there was a man named Sherlock Holmes who helped Dr. Roylott and Helen Stoner find out what happened to Julia. One major controversy is how readers may ponder if Holmes was guilty for the death of Roylott. Personally, I’d say he was not guilty for his death because for one, Holmes did not know Roylott was responsible for the death of Julia Stoner throughout the plot until the very end. Additionally, Holmes had nothing to do with the death of Roylott because he was protecting them, keeping them safe in full length the mystery. Thirdly, lastly, and most supportive of Holmes innocence, it was the speckled band that physically ended Dr. Roylott’s life, wrapping around his neck, killing him. Holmes was not taking place in this event whatsoever, proving his state in the story as innocent. Holmes did not insist on hurting anyone in the group throughout the story at all. In fact, when the incident occurred, he was not even in the room! So how is it physically possible that Sherlock Holmes was responsible for his death? He was not, in any way, shape, or form. Additionally, how could Sherlock Holmes know that the snake was going to go after Dr. Roylott? He did not set up anything to direct the snake towards Roylott. In fact, after the murder of Dr. Roylott, both Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were in shock and a bit fearful of the snake. To keep the speckled band from hurting anyone else, Sherlock Holmes grabbed the snake using an object to grab its neck and trapped it inside Dr. Roylotts metal safe. Therefore, he was trying to protect the characters from the speckled band from potentially further and deadly
