Molly Pitcher (real name is believed to be Mary Ludwig Hays) was born on October 15th, 1754. Pitcher played an amazing role in the Revolutionary War; she was fearless and ready to step up and take on a challenge. Because Molly’s husband was in the war, she accompanied him in order to bring him and other soldiers pitchers of water as they were fighting, thus earning her nickname. Molly’s husband William Hays, who was originally a barber, became a gunner when the war broke out. During a particular fight as Molly was bringing water to the soldiers, her husband supposedly collapsed from either the extreme heat or a battle wound. Molly watched this happen and without hesitation she ran over and took her husband's place by operating a cannon.
