The American Dream America is one of the greatest countries because you can start from nothing but still achieve your dreams. Throughout this semester we explored the idea of the American Dream and how it can influence somebody’s life for the better or for the worst. The American Dream is the dream that everybody in America has an equal opportunity to succeed, as long as they work hard and stay focused. In all the books, short stories, movies, and poems we explored this year, they all focused on the American Dream and how we can become successful using this dream. The American Dream can cause you to do things that you thought you would never have to face. While trying to accomplish your American Dream, do not let it distract you from the things that really matter. In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Lennie faces this problem when he decides he wants to tend the rabbits. He becomes blind to everything except for the bunnies, which leads him to makes decisions that did not benefit him. When George first tells Lennie that he can tend the rabbits, he becomes stuck on the idea that he will be able to accomplish his American Dream. “‘Tried and tried,’ Said Lennie, ‘but it didn’t do no good. I remember about the rabbits, George.’ ‘The hell with the rabbits. That’s all you ever can remember is them rabbits. O.K.! This semester, we read many poems about the American Dream. In the poem “Dream Deferred” By Langston Hughes, they refer to the American Dream being sugary and sweet. The American Dream can lead you to happiness and the feeling of being accomplished. “Does it stink like rotten meat? / Or crust and sugar over-- / like syrup sweet?” (Hughes, 6-8). The American Dream can sometimes be happy and sweet. Your dreams can cause you happiness, which helps you get through the hard times in life. The poem “I Hear America Singing” by Walt Whitman also refers to the American Dream in a happy way. “I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear, / Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe / and strong.” (Whitman, 1-3). The poem is very happy, people are realizing that things could be worse and that there is still hope for America. The American Dream is looked at as a good thing that everyone should have in their life. This poem was also written right before the war, so America was in a less depressing time and people could support themselves.
