Wood's method of re-telling Franklin's story is a good way to look at him in five different settings, becoming a gentleman, followed by becoming an imperialist, patriot, diplomat, and American.
People today cannot help but to be astonished by Franklin's remarkable modernity. Franklin saw the new world as an expanding nation that would outnumber Europe at some point. At first he believed in British imperialism but soon began to question their rule. Then he become a Patriot for the new word and sought separation from British control as he "began
