Watching the Anonymous People was very heartbreaking, especially the opening of the movie which featured a devastated mother whose son died from a substance use disorder. The irony of this movie is the fact that people today are no longer remaining ‘anonymous’ they are speaking out about their addiction, and they are no longer afraid. Most people explain in the movie that the reason that they’re speaking out is because they’re tired of the stigmas’ that are attached to those who are suffering from addiction. Also, as the mother who lost her son stated, she is speaking up because she does not want others to feel the way she does, and she also does not want others to lose family, friends, and loved ones to addiction. These similarities include the support from those who are either in a 12-step self-help program with you, especially if you have a sponsor, and the support from those who are involved in the same community organizations as you. Support is very important when it comes to recovery, and staying clean and sober because as the priest who goes to the church in the movie stated, when he helps others recover from addiction, it helps him stay clean because he is serving a very important purpose, he is their support and they are his support for staying away from both alcohol and illegal substances. Another similarity between the two is that they both inform the public about how addiction is not a choice, it is a disease, and there are many people who suffer, but did not choose to become addicted. Lastly, they are fighting discrimination, and this ties in with support from others. In these programs and organizations, they are not only getting the support they need, they are also not being discriminated against, which is common among those who do not understand what addiction is, or that it is a
