The Mississippi Becoming the Atchafalaya
In the article, “The Atchafalaya,” written by John McPhee he describes one of the major events that is now taking place. The article was written to inform us on how the Mississippi River will soon be taken over by the Atchafalaya. It is also describing all the human projects that have taken place to try and help the control of the water itself. This river caused many effects on places, people, and other factors that were around it. Some of the other major points that McPhee points out is the intense flooding that occurred, as well as all the diversion that has taken place with the river over time. Overall, the article helps us to understand the nature of how two rivers can cause many different effects on the environment and its surroundings.
The Atchafalaya is a historic waterscape located in southern Louisiana. It branches off of the Mississippi river and it provides ways of trade and commerce for surrounding areas. Some scientist believe that over a period of time the Atchafalaya will become the main river and take the place of the Mississippi. However, the Atchafalaya wasn’t always as favorable and glorified as it is today. Image one shows the separation between each of the rivers and the direction in which each of them flow. Image two on the other hand just shows us where the Atchafalaya Basin is located in the state of Louisiana. As for image three it helps us to understand how the flooding occurs and where is it. It describes how quickly some of the places can fill up with water, and how the Corps of Engineers predict this. Also, if you look closely you are able to see where some of the levees are located as well as some of the towns that we have mentioned
