The Athenian soldier’s oath was based upon honor. The oath that the soldiers took was all about honor and respect. The oath stated that the soldier was to “... strive to hand on my fatherland greater and better than I found it”. This means that the soldier was to leave his country a better, more successful place than it was before he came. It also means that he will protect his land. The oath also says “I will not consent to anyone’s disobeying or destroying the constitution but will prevent him, whether I am with others or alone”. This is stating that the soldier will try to stop his comrades and the citizens of Athens from breaking the rules set by his betters, no matter what. It is also saying that he will try to make sure that the people around him are doing the right thing even if no one is watching. The soldiers of Athens had many rules they had to follow, even if they affected their daily lives. We know this because the oath states, “I will honor the temples and the religion my forefathers established”. This is saying that the soldier has to follow, protect, respect, honor, and represent the religion of their country. Athenian soldiers were expected to be respectful and honorable. A difference is that the Athenian soldier had to memorize and recite that pledge as well as live it, and American soldiers only had to live their pledge. Another difference is what is expected of the soldiers. Athenian soldiers must have honor and respect, while American soldiers have many more values, including courage, integrity, and loyalty. There are similarities too. Some similarities are that both of the soldiers have to have honor and be respectful. The soldiers are not supposed to abandon their comrades or disrespect them.
