In her novel, The Awakening, author Kate Chopin conveys a strong atmosphere for the evolving storyline. Director, Mike Newell, in his movie, Mona Lisa Smile, demonstrates a well thought out setting. Chopin and Newell have the same purpose of showing the positive changes in strong female characters as time passes. Chopin adopts a light hearted tone in order to display the importance of women's role in society to her young adult audience, while Newell's movie takes on a more serious approach to portray the differences in society that can have a positive effect on his female, teenage audience. Chopin's use of setting was more effective in conveying the significance of feminism in society to her young adult audience. Both the movie, Mona Lisa Smile, and the novel, The Awakening make effective use of settings to tell their stories, but there are a few major differences leading us to very different outcomes. *or (convey very different messages/meaning?) In both the book and the movie, the stories take place over the course of a year...The time period of a year which gives a great all around view into Katie and Edna’s daily lives. Two major similarities are the time span of the stories, and the displacement of the main characters from their homeland. The time period, state, and political ways of society are just a few of the different elements of the stories that make significant impact on the target audience. I felt that the background details in Chopin’s novel had a greater impact in her adolescent readers and did a good job of highlighting of the importance of women's rights in an ever-changing world.
