The Baath Party: The French Mandate In Syria

The French Mandate in Syria began in 1920, and lasted for 26 years until Syria became an independent state (One World Nations, 2011). During this period, France suppressed Syrians from civil rights, political activity, and publishing newspapers (One World Nations, 2011). In 1944, the Soviet Union and the United States recognized Syria as a sovereign state despite French opposition (One World Nations, 2011). By 1946, when all French troops were forced to leave, Syria was recognized as an independent state (One World Nations, 2011).
