I am reading “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant” by W. D. Wetherell and I am on page 5. So far, this story is about a boy who finally gets a date with the girl he’s been in love with all summer. She hates fishing but it is his favorite pastime so he has to keep it secret that he has a bass on the line during their first date. In this journal, I will be predicting and connecting. Will the narrator choose the girl, or the fish? He might choose the girl because he really likes her. You can tell he likes her because he watches her all the time, which is kind of creepy if you ask me. He also tries to show off his diving skills whenever she is around. In the story, he regretted his decision to cut the fishing line and set the bass free. He chose Sheila over the fish but that was a big mistake. He knew that Sheila hated fishing, so in order for her to like him, he thought he needed to get rid of the bass. He thought this would make her like him more but he was definitely wrong. Sheila ended up dumping him in the end, so sadly he lost both of his loves. He was also trying to be who he thought she wanted him to be. He thought maybe she would make him popular. He was mistaken. The biggest bass he’d ever hooked, gone. I can relate to the narrator’s feelings of regret. I regret going to the first varsity football game of the season last Friday. My friend who was supposed to go with me bailed at the very last minute. It was so humiliating. I stood at the game by myself the entire time. Then, I went to the back-to-school dance. It was a waste of my five dollars. I ended up leaving the dance very shortly after I arrived because everyone I walked there with left me as soon as we walked in the door. Overall, it was a terrible night for me and I wish I had just stayed
