The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the most significant battles of the Civil War as it marked a turning point in the War. This battle greatly weakened the South, as Robert E. Lee lost a third of his army during the battle. With a weakened army the South never attempted to invade the North again which impacted the Union's rise to victory. Had Lee's plan to invade the North worked the effects on the Union forces would have been detrimental and could have cost them the War. As southern forces never completely recovered the Union became more victorious eventually leading to Robert E. Lee's surrender less than 2 years later.
