The Beginnings Every book in the Bible, in the New and Old Testament, has several themes. With that each book has many different interpretations. I have decided to choose the book of Genesis, focusing on the theme of the “beginnings”, there are many things that began in this book such as; the universe, earth, people, sin and God’s plan.
Genesis is the first book of the Bible which is also the first book of the Old Testament. Genesis literally means “origin” in Greek. All these things that were created in the beginning took seven days to complete. That is astounding, with that being said this concept is hard to grasp for non-believers, mainly because they cannot accept that it was possible for God to make life on earth in just seven days. Firstly, God created the heavens and the earth. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth… ‘Let there be light’… ‘Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.’” (Genesis 1:1, 3, 4). He goes on to create the specifics, light and dark, day and night, herbs, fruits and vegetables. God then creates animals to fill the seas and to walk the land. He then blessed them to “Be fruitful and multiply…” (Genesis 1:22).
Thereafter, God decided to make man. “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, overall the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So god created man in His own image; in the image of God He create him; male and female He created them (Genesis 1:26-27). God then goes on to say that man He has provided him with bountiful amounts of food.
The first man God created was Adam, whom he placed in the Garden of Eden, which is where Adam was to reside and up keep the garden. God presented Adam with every creature he had generated to find him a mate that would be comparable to him. Adam was to name each creature he was offered, Adam did this but still did not find anything comparable to him. God then took a rib from Adams side and created another being. Adam said “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman. Because she was taken out of Man” (Genesis 2:23). Adam named this woman Eve.
This is where God created marriage. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). Adam and Eve went against God’s word, and this was the first example of sin in the Bible. For their sin, eating the fruit from The Tree of Knowledge, they were also the first example of punishment.
Sin and punishment maybe things that people would not consider as a
