Foster care holds a depth that not many truly know. That is, unless one has been personally involved with it and has seen all of the hidden truths. When many hear the term “foster care” they immediately begin to think only of the foster children. However, they don’t seem to pay any mind to all of the people associated and how foster care affects them. One of the many who are heavily involved would be the social workers. Social work is “any of various professional activities or methods concretely concerned with providing social services … physically, mentally, or socially disadvantaged,” according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. McClintock also told of stories where he had a biological parent call him freaking out about her child. This African-American woman believed her daughter was dead. The second she found out otherwise, she verbally attacked her daughter over the phone and the social worker, too, about the child’s placement in a predominantly white household. McClintock said that this is a regular occurrence in the foster system. Parents not wanting anything to do with their kids, but they are willing to blame the workers for anything and everything about the child’s upbringing. The foster kids themselves tend to have a better idea for their future and take steps in order to achieve that goal. Shay Brown, a former foster child, was asked about foster care as far as their help offered to better a foster child’s future. There are a couple of things that stood out in her response. Whereas many children only have their parents as guidance, a foster child has multiple, their social worker, foster parents, and biological parents if they choose. This way one may have many different perspectives being given to really aid them in making important choices that will heavily affect the child’s future. Brown also mentioned that her favorite parts were the facts that there’s always a plan and college is paid for which is incredibly beneficial when it comes down to it. She also chose to point out that her previous foster family provided her with the feeling of love and being welcomed and wanted that she was otherwise deprived
