For many thousands of years, people have hunted waterfowl all over the world.Many people hunt waterfowl today for many reasons like for a sport and for food. Waterfowl hunting is ancient, time consuming, expensive, and fun.

Waterfowl hunting has been around for thousands of years.The earliest waterfowl hunting documented is about 12,000, years ago.The earliest decoys were made of natural vegetation shaped and or carved out of soft wood such as pine. The earliest waterfowl hunting in North America notes was Lewis and Clark. In the 1920s-1930s a law was passed that you could not use punt guns for waterfowl. The most common types of geese hunted are Canadian geese, snow geese and speckled belly geese also known as the white-fronted goose. Did you know that Canadian geese can fly 1,500 miles in 24 hours? Geese fly in a V shape because it saves their energy, When they fly that way they take turns leading and if one gets tired it falls behind and goes on one end of the V. Goose hunting takes place in dry fields or flooded wheat, rice, or corn. Goose hunting is done where you lay in the decoys or in a blind behind them and call to bring the geese to you. They also do a method on some geese like snow geese that is called jump shooting. This is where the hunter or hunters sneak up on the geese. Now they jump to scare the geese and then shoot them. Some goose hunting involves more decoys than duck hunting.

Waterfowl hunting calls and decoys can be expensive if bought and difficult to make if hand made. Most of the older waterfowl calls were made of wood or must with their mouth. The basic call has a barrel, a reed, an insert, and a sound board. Most common decoys bought today are made of hard plastic that has been painted. While some are still wood but are far and few between and also expensive. The most expensive decoys bought went at auction and sold for 10.9 million dollars.
