I believe that in the short story The Bet by Anton Chekhov, there is no real winner of the bet. The banker was trying to prove that solitary confinement was worse than death and the lawyer was trying to prove the death was the worst punishment of all. Neither proved their argument right successfully. The banker was forced to live with the guilt of taking 15 years of someone’s life away, and the lawyer spent 15 of what could have been his most productive years locked up by himself. Both men suffered, but I do believe that one benefited more from the bet. The banker spent those 15 years filled with guilt and resentment while the lawyer was able to enhance his education and reflect on his life and the world. He finished his 15 years alone filled
