I found this section of the Spade book to be especially interesting, as I just recently sat in on a committee hearing in the Capitol that was hearing a bill promoting birth certificate and investigatory (for the purposes of amending birth certificates)transgender reform. One particularly conservative member of the committee called for the people to consider safety concerns of amended birth certificates; one point was the chance for fraud (getting away with crimes following an identity change), and cited terrorism concerns as well. This book hit right on his point, noting that “An understanding of the dire consequences of administrative gender classifications, especially given the expansion of identity surveillance in the wake of September 11th
