While reading “The Bonds of Battle” Junger uses his personal experiences to explain the background of PTSD. A quote that stood out to me that summed up the whole essay is “And I had this incredible feeling of euphoria and strength, like I could do anything. That’s when the healing takes place. That’s when life changes take place” (101-102). To me this means that Junger is saying that if you can stick it out through the pain then you can do anything you set your mind to. He not only uses this sentence to show the pain and realf when a person leaves war and returns home but when someone is trying to conquer a disease, someone who recently lost a loved one, and someone who is returning home from war. When someone is trying to conquer a disease or cancer they go through so much pain physically and mentally. Their goal is to defeat the diseases they have encountered in order to stay alive. In some cases this sadly is not always accomplished. For instance, if a little girl has cancer her one goal is to get back with her groove and go play like a normal kid. After a person sticks through the pain and follows up with the treatments, they will hopefully soon get the incredible feeling of euphoria and strength and will know in their mind that they can accomplish anything now because they have climbed the hardest mountain. Going back to the quote Junger caught my attention to relate to this particular situation because losing someone can be the hardest thing in life and make you feel worthless about yourself. Once you have accepted the fact that they are gone and is in a better place then you will feel the weight come off your shoulders.
