Freedom is explored in The Book Thief, through the protagonist Liesel as she looks to books and words for clarification and comfort. When her brother is being buried, Liesel finds a book on the ground, called ‘The Graveyard Handbook’. This is used to symbolise the connection she had with him ‘she bent down and picked it up and held it firmly in her fingers. The book had silver writing on it’ (pg. 24). Zusak expresses that this is where the beginning of her understanding of words starts. When Liesel is caught with ‘The Graveyard Handbook’ Hans Hubermann ask if she can read, “‘read some more for me but of course she couldn’t’ “(pg. 69). Hans starts teaching Liesel to read every night “papa learned over and said, ‘enough for tonight?”(pg. 70).
