The Holocaust (1941 – 1945) is a term for the systematic Genocide of Jews, Mentally and physically disabled, POWs and other minorities, committed by Hitler’s Nazi Germany. Jews made up the far majority of Holocaust victims, as they were taken from their homes and marched into ghettos where poor conditions, disease and starvation were common. These ghettos served as a temporary holding place where Jews were to wait for deportation or extermination. This essay will discuss the ghettos, which the Nazis forced the Jews to inhabit, as well as Jews trying to hide or escape persecutions. This will be directly related to the fictional film ‘The Book Thief’ based on WW2.

Then as Nazi investigations became more thorough, many Jews went into hiding or fled the country. This is seen in The Book Thief as Hans Huberman, a German sympathetic to Jews, helps remove Jewish names from shop signs and provides refuge to a Jewish refugee. This shows the acts of Humanity that many people displayed under harsh circumstances. Helping Jews was a crime punishable by death, yet many Germans risked their lives to help Jews evading persecution. However Nazi loyalists who reported any suspicious activity, leading to many arrests of Germans harbouring Jewish refugees, outnumbered the sympathetic German citizens.

In conclusion, the treatment and genocide of Jews in ghettos and exterminations camps highlights the worst of humanity. However, some acts of kindness and bravery shine through the darkness and highlight the humanity that people are capable of, such as people risking their lives to help Jewish friends, or strangers, hide from or escape
