Books and words in The Book Thief let people escape from the horrors of World War II, enlightened people and controlled them, and lastly books and words connected people. Liesel would read to people which would take their mind off from the bad things that were happening around them. Hitler was attempting to control the Germans by disposing of books that would enlighten people about the Jews and other non-Nazi beliefs. Lastly, books and words connected people together. Liesel read to Max, Hans, Frau Holtzapfel, and the group in the shelter, which brought them close together and strengthened the bond between them. When Liesel was first adopted by Hans and Liesel, she did not talk much to them and was very shy. Every night Liesel would have a nightmare and would wake up in the middle of the night. Her foster dad (Hans) would come in and soothe her. At her brother's funeral, she picked up a book on the ground called the “Gravedigger’s Handbook”. Liesel wanted to read it, but did not know how to read. Together, Liesel and Hans read the book every night once Liesel woke up from her nightmares. Hans would teach Liesel the words and slowly she was able to read. Reading together brought Hans and Liesel very close. Liesel came to love Hans, and Hans loved her back. A couple of years later, after Liesel read to the group in the raid shelter, Frau Holtzapfel wanted Liesel to read to her. Liesel would come to Frau’s house twice a week and read to her. Together, they connected and Liesel despised her less. Liesel would also read to Max in the basement, and when he was sick in a coma.
