In the Boy in The Striped Pyjamas, we see many examples of dramatic irony. This helps to create the story to become more powerful because the childhood innocence in the story proves that children cannot comprehend/understand that such horrible things can happen in the world. Bruno and Gretel did not know the reason why so many people were on the other side of the fence. “ ‘This must be the countryside,’ said Gretel… that’s the only explanation don’t you see?’ “ (pg,33). The quote proves that dramatic irony is powerful because Bruno and Gretel don’t know the reason why all the people down on the other side of the fence are working/slaving away so they assume that it is a farm. “ ‘Are there many other boys there?’ asked Bruno. ‘Hundreds’ said Shmuel… ‘There’s no one to play with on this side of the fence’... ‘We don’t play’ said Shmuel. (pg.130-131). The quote proves that dramatic irony is very powerful in the story because Bruno doesn’t understand why Shmuel and the other boys don’t play which we know that it is no place for little boys to play. This also proves my claim because Bruno suggests in the story that he comes over Shmuel's side of the fence to play but Shmuel is not to sure (pg.131). This indicates that Bruno still doesn’t understand why the other side of the fence is so bad. Bruno doesn’t understand why Pavel quit his job as a doctor. “ ‘But I don’t understand’ , said Bruno… If you’re a doctor why are you waiting on tables?” (pg.83). The quotes proves dramatic irony because Bruno keeps questioning Pavel why he isn’t a doctor anymore. My claim is also supported by my quote because Bruno just starts thinking that Pavel quit being a doctor because he just wasn’t very good. But in reality, Pavel was forced to quit his job as a doctor because he is
