In the beginning Bruno was a young and innocent boy. Not knowing what exists beyond the town of Berlin he finds out and turns into a more knowledgeable young man. Friends are lost and made and discrimination becomes a major factor in Bruno's life. If Bruno did not go through these experiences his life would have been completely different.

Friendship in the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a non stop occurrence not only with the main character Bruno but with many other people in the novel. When Bruno lived in Berlin he had 3 close friends Karl, Daniel and Martin, but when Bruno found out he was leaving Berlin his friends were no longer friends. Bruno arrived in Out-With and after a few months he went exploring and found his new best friend Shmuel. Shmuel became Bruno's one and only friend. When Bruno felt down or lonely he would go see Shmuel although they never played together they just enjoyed each others company. Later on in the novel Bruno's mother ended up becoming really bored with the new house and everyone in it, so she started an affair with Lieutenant Kotler. “Mother laughed at his jokes more than fathers…” Bruno does lose friends but makes

As it is World War II there is a lot of racism towards the jews. “make sure you wash your hands you filthy jew…” This is what Bruno often hears and at the start of the novel he does not know what it is about but towards the end of the novel Bruno changes his thoughts towards the way the jews are treated. When Bruno meets Shmuel he soon finds out that he is a jew but Bruno shows no sign of discrimination towards him “but i'm a jew”. Lieutenant Kotler was a soldier who was very discriminating to the jews. Bruno saw Lieutenant Kotler do many bad things to the jews “He walked right up to the dog and shot it dead” This shows his aggression to something that did nothing wrong.
