To the reader’s satisfaction, Phoenix ultimately achieves a breakthrough. She receives a sample of coffee, which is unusually wrapped in a newspapers, and she poses to herself, “Why, how come he wrapped it in a newspaper?” she is finally able to read the content of the newspaper, where she reads that she, as Ruby Fisher had been shot in the leg by her husband, Clyde Fisher. This new development angers her, as she runs outside into the storm, and back into the house. She tosses herself onto the ground in rage, and she tries to imagine herself and Clyde, walking up behind Phoenix. This is the greatest breakthrough in the story.
