A key concept featured prominently within the western politics is power, associated to a Prime Minister, politics functions on the ability of a Prime Minister to rightly exercise his or her powers. Power is a concept which throughout history has been disputed multiple times through wars, treaties, bills. Several topic of debate included the features that such power should bring along but most importantly what checks must be put in place for such amount of power. In several democratic countries such as Canada power is divided among different political branches; the three key branches being the Executive branch, the Legislative branch and the Judiciary branch. More precisely the governor general must pass legislation that has already passed through parliament and many other decisions and the governor general must follow orders from the Prime Minister which confirms that the Prime Minister of Canada has great powers. The source of such prime ministerial powers consists of key conventions and constitutions such as party discipline, responsible government and power over houses within parliament. The power over houses allows the prime minister to gain vote of confidence from his own party’s MPs to continue charge of the parliament. Although such power is situational as in the case of a majority government, the Prime Minister is often described as a ‘friendly dictator’ signifying the amount of power they hold, because he or she answers to no higher authority. Although, It is often argued that there are checks in place that keeps the Prime Minister from exploiting their power or disturbing the balance of Canadian Politics but the concentration of power is a concern and signifies that the Canadian Prime Minister is all too powerful which can hurt the Canadian politics in the long …show more content…
This electoral system means that the citizens do not vote directly for the country leader but instead the executives that will decide who will decide themselves who will become the country leader. The Parliamentary system features the connection between the executive branch and the legislative branch where Senators are usually affiliated with the party that has won the election because the Prime Minister gets to appoint the Senate members. Furthermore, the Prime Minister’s government needs confidence from the House of Commons, which introduces the convention of Responsible government. The convention of Responsible government states that in a governing system the executive branch is accountable for their actions in front of the parliament and must retain the confidence in order to stay in power. Although, the parliamentary system remains efficient, despite the concept of Responsible government, the Prime Minister has the convention of party discipline to support him for confidence votes. The convention of party discipline states that the party members of the party running the government should vote in accordance to the side that their party has adopted in the caucus. (Politics, Power
