Arguable one of the most crazed of men, Montressor, feels slighted by the lack of tradition withheld amongst the new money for his family is old money that stressed certain values that we gather Fortunato unsuspectingly breaks. Montressor plays a sly game of cat and mouse that poor Fortunato never suspects. First Montressor plays upon Fortunato's pride by dropping the name of his publicly known enemy, later he gives Fortunato the option of turning back from the hunt for the Amontillado several times due to the suggested health concerns. Montressor is playing Fortunato like a violin in order to get Fortunato to ask for his untimely demise unwittingly. Once down in the deep recesses of the catacombs Montressor bricks Fortunato behind a wall and leaves him there to perish.

Montressor born of old money can no longer bear the insult of his new money friend that does not behave as Montressor has been brought up to believe money should be like. He is so quickly slighted by this man that knows not of what he is doing to cast insult. Tragically Montressor vows revenge upon Fortunato stirring up a plot of premeditated and dastardly murder so brilliant it is not discover till what can be interpreted as a death bed confession.

Deep into the crypt they travel in search of wine that would never be so deeply hidden as to inaccessible. The depth of travel is a symbol for the deep recese in the mind that Montressor is storing the murder of Fortunato in his mind. For Montressor to leave the body of Fortunato so deep is a slight
