Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe wrote the “The Cask of Amontillado” full of irony and symbolism to show a man who is longing for revenge. The article, “Confession Within A Confession: Poe’s Brave New World ‘The Cask of Amontillado’”, by Rehana Whatley, is focused on showcasing irony, symbolism, friendship, and deceit. The article argues that Montresor has it out to punish his supposed friend, Fortunato, in which I agree with the argument. The short story by Poe, “The Cask of Amontillado,” has quick points to exhibit the friendship between Montresor and Fortunato. Even though there are sinister plans to be carried out by Montresor against Fortunato, readers still keep it mind that there is at least a thread of friendship still attached between the two. Montresor has suffered, “thousand injuries of Fortunato” (Poe, 1117), which has led him to become so deceitful through the whole story. The article chosen insists, “Instead of Montresor it is as if Fortunato’s all-consuming ego is hurling him into the darkest abyss” (Whatley, 57).
