The first year for any child in kindergarten can be difficult, along with the changes with being in a school; children can misbehave poorly, yet they may have not even know what the consequences could be. Within Shirley Jackson’s short story, “Charles” there is a child in kindergarten, and similarly stated he was misbehaving; however, it was for a different reason than most children would even think about. In the 1950’s, a child named Laurie is the eldest sibling in the family, and before stated, he attended kindergarten which was something that he did not adapt strongly to. As a result of his failure to adjust, he has misbehaved.
Laurie was an extremely smart person for his age to figure that he could gain attention through negativity…show more content… The cause of this was most likely due to the fact that he was the older sibling and had a baby sister that probably received more attention. The other cause of having to seek attention could be because that it may have been dull lifeless in the household, and according to the short story, “Charles was an institution in our family” (348). This ability to outwit parents and gain attention was clever, nevertheless, if “Charles misbehavior” was the same actions as Laurie’s, then technically Laurie has been the extremely negative person, to an extent that one may say that he is cruel yet, on the other hand, he was flexible and willing to…show more content… All of this misbehavior was due to the fact that he had a younger baby sister which needed more attention, consequently enough, he wanted as much attention as his sister was receiving. This is what kept him from adjusting to kindergarten. Still, he managed to adapt and was flexible enough that he had changed, as a result he had become a good student and also was the teacher's helper. Despite the fact that Laurie had become a favorable student, his mother had gone to a PTA meeting in the end, and his teacher had said that there was no Charles, and from that point, his mother knew that Charles has been her son, Laurie, after
