“I burst into tears, gasping for breath as my cries turned hysterical. I finally understood them, this was supposed to be a home” (Preston 46). This line in The Cellar by Natasha Preston, grasped the main idea in one piece of the book. Summer, the main character is kidnapped and forced to live with her kidnapper and act like it never happened. To her surprise, there are other girls that had been kidnapped before her still there. Summer was told her new name was Lily. Like the others, Rose, Violet, and Poppy, their name was chosen from a flower. Clover, the man that kidnaps her has issues with his ancient family. I see them trembling before he came down at exactly 8:00 AM every morning. Hearing the words “Good morning, Flowers” (Preston 46) every morning like clockwork could make a person go insane, as it did for some. I visualize the terror as he took them into the closet and raped them. How many nightmares they must have had after the first time he did that to them must have been uncountable. The cowardice of not speaking up to him but not wanting to get hurt or even killed. There had been many before and after they got there that had tried to speak up and they had gotten hurt or killed. Was she really good at acting or did she actually love him? “Please don’t cry Lily. It’s really not that bad down here” (Preston 25) one of many quotes from Rose giving hints she likes it down there. There were points in the book where Rose would almost look excited when it was her turn for the closet. She almost seemed like she extoled him. There were times when she and only she had to calm him down and she took pride in it. But, she never said she loved him she only gave hints. Giving how the book ended, with her at the mental hospital, I would say she actually loved him. But after three years of being down there, there was no feasible way she was still
