The time period between 1837-1901 is known as the Victorian Era. The Victorian Era was established when Alexandrina Victoria the daughter of Edward the Duke of Kent became Queen (Victoria). She was queen for 63 years. Many of the modern sports that we love to watch and participate in today were derived from this era in time. Modifications were made to some sports and these changes brought them closer in line to how we play them now. Some were played by certain genders others were mixed. There was one sport that grew in popularity during this time, football.

Sports played in the Victorian Era

The church communities believed that there needed to be activities to keep people fit and healthy. This encouraged the creation of many sporting activities. Football is a game with two halves, two goals and a field full of men,tackling and kicking an oval shaped ball. People were originally hesitant to play due to the lack of rules and no umpires. This caused tackling that was “bone crunching” and injuries were regular but as time went on and rules were put in place the sport grew and the stadiums filled with fans.The first football clubs were formed from within the community churches.The churches ruled that it’s players must attend mass as much as possible and if you didn’t attend it was most likely you would not be chosen to play. The first ever game of football was played in 1871 between two london sides In 1880, the game became an international sport with the first game played between Austria and England. Football was always a sport that was only played by men, only recently has it been played by both genders.The English Premier League is still the most popular sport
