If someone gave you the option of freedom or a lifetime in prison, which one would you choose? The story takes place in Salem and Concord, Massachusetts, during the late 1840s. Hester Prynne is an immigrant from Europe who had committed adultery. Because of this sin, she was forced to wear a scarlet A on her clothes. This separated her from the rest of society.

Some say that Hester should have revealed the true identity of her husband. Other believe that she should not have revealed the true identity of her husband. If Hester had revealed who he was, she would not worry about him coming after her. Finally if Hester had revealed the identity of her husband she would be living be living better. She would make more money and people would appreciate her needle work.
