In the tragic play Othello, jealousy and envy are important. As the play unfolds, it is evident every character in this heartbreaking play suffers from one of the most humiliating and destructive emotions; jealousy. There are many quotes that follow jealousy, one of them is “O! beware, my lord, of jealousy; it is the green-ey’d monster which doth mock The meat it feeds on (Act III, scene iii)”. This quotation is significant to the play because jealousy does turn people into monsters. Jealousy is described as the “green-eyed monster.” This quotation has warned us to never trust anything Iago says. Jealousy is horrible. Relationships end because of jealous conflicts and people start to develop horrible feeling toward one another because of the jealous envy inside them. It is not easy to control the green-eyed monster that arises and starts taking control of our minds, when we see someone with something we want and think, “I want what you have and therefore until I have it, you shouldn’t have it either.” An example would be a woman who dislikes her coworker for being promoted before she was or a man who wants to purchase the same car as his neighbor. For example, if your neighbor purchases a new car he may have worked very had to achieve that car. Then, you feel envious about their success. The most common emotional response to watching others succeed while you fail is disappointment. Which is what Iago had felt with Othello. Another very common example that we see in most movies and novels is relationship jealousy. When a relationship partner does not answer their phone, and the first thought that comes to mind is that they are misbehaving.
