In the Chrysalids by John Wyndham, the people of Waknuk believe that deviants are an abomination, they should be deprived, treated with cruelty and sent to the fringes, which should stop because aunt Harriet asks Emily to swap babies to get her baby certified, Emily refuses and aunt Harriet commits suicide, David jokes about having an extra hand, Joseph yells at him and the whole family prays for forgiveness just because David jokes about having another hand and aunt Harriet commits suicide because her baby is a deviant. Deviants should not be deprived or treated with cruelty as they are not much different from other people, deviants have a choice to or not to harm anything in their society just like a normal person.

When Emily gets her baby certified as normal, aunt harriet goes to Emily’s house and tells her that her husband would leave her if she gave birth to another deviant , asks her to swap babies, so she could claim Petra as hers and get her baby certified as normal. Emily is shocked she refuses and tells aunt Harriet that what she wants her to do is a crime and she will not help her commit it and asks her how she even thought of doing something like that. Joseph tells her that she has done something terribly wrong, she should pray to god, asking for forgiveness. Joseph and Emily kick her out of their house and she commits suicide and ends her baby's
