The Color of Water, by James McBride, tells the story of how a mother and a son share their difficult times and how they overcome the obstacles that they endure. Both James and his mother,Ruth have a hard childhood and have to deal with many difficult situations. Throughtout their life James and Ruth had to overcome horrible choices and tragedies. I was inspired by their strength and ability to overcome the trials and tribulations of their life.
James, had some very hard times growing up that included racism and the drugs. Some of the racism the occurred actually happed within his family. With James being younger than his siblings, they would always tease and mess with him. I remember when reading I noticed that James was always asking his mother and elder siblings “what color am I?” They would always say that he is white and different because the rest of the family is black. When James was told all of this about him being white and different James of course would believe them. With this I believe that James being told that he is different that it could have persuaded him to make some of the choices that ended up changing his life for the worse. This is because when James is told that he’s different the idea that he has nobody and he is alone being very apparent. These things will help him fall on the path of drugs and other crime that James later fell into.

I realized that I need to appreciate what I have and what my family has to offer. I am so fortunate to live the life that I was given and this story about Ruth and James has shown me that I should never take anything for granted because I am truly blessed. Ruth is an inspiration and a role model to me and anyone that knows her story. She has taught me that no matter how bad things become, you will always have your
