Concussions in Football Over the past few decades one injury has taken headlines over by storm. Concussions have single-handedly demonstrated everything we do not know about brain injuries. The NFL in particular has taken the most heat over this injury. Through countless lawsuits, and hearings the NFL has been sued by former NFL players for mishandling of their personal health and safety. Attempting to soften the blow, the NFL and many other organizations have taken a substantial amount of moves to protect the athletes who play the sport of football. The biggest concern for concussions in football is CTE, (Chronic traumatic encephalopathy). “It is a progressive degenerative disease which afflicts the brain of people who have suffered repeated concussions and traumatic brain injuries, such as athletes who take part in contact sports, members of the military and others. The brain of an individual who suffers from chronic traumatic encephalopathy gradually deteriorates and will over time end up losing mass. CTE has been linked to the deaths of many professional and college-level athletes including Junior Seau, and Rashaan Salaam. They cannot be stopped, but they can be controlled to a point. The risk is always there to get concussed. To control this players must follow their coach’s and team’s rules. They should also know when it is too much and whether or not they want to risk their future for a couple games. Concussions can be very easily handled and cared for, but to do so it takes the right decisions by players, coaches, and team physicians. The long-term effects of concussions are a scary reality every player has the possibility of dealing with. Football is a very joyous sport that offers a variety of things for the players, fans, and teams. To ensure everyone is cared for guidelines must be followed and further advancements in health of players and conditions need to be stressed the best they can
