The Confederate Flag’s Impact: The Critical Analysis of the Confederate Flag The occasion in which the controversy of the Confederate Flag was brought about was the Charleston church shooting at the Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where a white man killed nine African-Americans. There are two sides to this story according to “Take Down the Confederate Flag, Symbol of Hatred” and “Keep the Confederate Flag Flying”. While the first supports the removing of the flag, the other wants to keep the flag how it has been. “Keep the Confederate Flag Flying” has the goal of convincing the people to keep the Confederate Flag because it is a symbol to many; “the flag is viewed by millions as a symbol of Southern Heritage” (Duke 1). On the other hand, “Take Down the Confederate Flag, Symbol of Hatred” displays the opposite viewpoints of the other story, which is removing the Confederate Flag.
The writer in “Keep the Confederate Flag Flying” has a more so disgusted tone because the flag is being removed after being in history for so long. The other author has a firm tone trying to stand up for the removal of the flag so that the country can get peace from the hatred that is still here today because of the past.
Although the two articles are from different views, the audience is the people of South Carolina due to the shooting which took place in Charleston. In “Take Down the Confederate Flag, Symbol of Hatred”, the author is also talking to people in the Legislature; An example of the legislature being referred to is “The flag was brought into the state Senate two years after the Supreme Court struck down school segregation in Brown v.
