In medieval times women had many constraints as to what they were allowed to do, how they were allowed to act, how much they were paid and what jobs they could have. A medieval woman had very few of her own choices and her life was ruled by men. The man seen to be in charge of a female would change as times passed, it could be their brother or father before they married, but afterwards they ‘belonged’ to their husband. A woman would be punished for disobeying or not showing submission to the men who ruled her life.
