Within the context of the novel, Richard’s family is a typical Latino family that has a great devotion towards Catholicism—hence, Richard finds himself obligated to go to church and confess. However, on a deeper level, to Richard, the church represents his culture and his heritage as oppose to the police department, which represents America (the new culture). As he grows up, he struggles between the two cultures—the Old (Mexico/the Church) versus the New (America/the Police). Slowly, yet steady, he pulls out from the former in favor of the later.
