The controversy about Hollywood’s diversity among the African American community has continued to ebb and flow over the years. Almost all black actors are still only being recognized by the Academy Awards for playing specifically black characters in movies. More than 50 black actors and actresses have been nominated and won Oscars throughout the history of the Academy Awards; however, most were awarded for roles that could only be played by black actors, either historical or fictional. When Halle Berry and Denzel Washington won the best-acting Oscar categories and Sidney Poitier was honored with a lifetime achievement award in 2002, the night was a huge success for black actors in the United States. David White, the National Director for the Screen Actors Guild said, “It has been a long and often difficult journey for African-American performers throughout the history of this industry. In many ways, they now have more opportunity than ever before, but there is still much more to accomplish”. Parts should not have a skin color requirement. Black actors would be afforded a wider range of opportunity if they could seek out roles regardless of the color of their skin. This would also allow for them to build a following among general audiences and propel them into superstardom. In The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Malcolm X agrees with the “color-blind” theme as a whole and exhibits influence from Islam in saying, “The color-blindness of the Muslim world’s religious society and the color-blindness of the world’s human society: these two influences each day had been making a greater impact” (Alex Haley
