Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Abigail Williams is most to blame in the Salem witch trials. She was an orphan that lived in Salem, Massachusetts with her uncle, reverend Pairrs, and her cousin, Betty Parris. She was seventeen years old and was the leader of the group of girls in the town of Salem. A servant to the proctor family, her wrongful actions led to many people dying during the witch trials. Miller demonstrated that it was Abigail William’s flaws – Lust, Dishonestly, and vengefulness – that led her to be most responsible for the tragedy of the witch-hunt in Salem. When Abigail worked as a servant to the Proctor family, she and John had an affair seven months before the witch trials, which made Abigail fall in love with him and want him for herself. She states to Mr. Proctor “I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near” (Miller 470). Abigail recollect the night they made love to which her confession to him is discreet that she still longs for him. She also states to John “I am waitin’ for you every night” (Miller 469). Abigail believes that John will come for her and whisk her away to be together; nonetheless John informed her that that will never happen, to erase that night.
