In most stories, there are good and bad people, also known the protagonist and the antagonist. The antagonist and protagonists are pretty much what make up any books and movies. A book or movie would be boring without bad people and good people. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, there are many good and bad people throughout this play. In this play, John Proctor is a hero and Abigail Williams an anti-hero. While there could have been many other people chosen for the hero, I chose John Proctor for many reasons. The first reason is that he isn't like other people, he sticks up for people. For example when Abigail and John were outside and abigail was trying to get john back and John said, “ ‘you’ll speak nothin’ of Elizabeth’ “ (22)! Also, he thinks of other people, like when he signed the confession when he was in his cell, and after he signed the document he ripped it up. He was thinking about the other people that died and how they were innocent so he thought about others when his life was on the line. Another reason Abigail is an anti-hero is when Abigail tries to flirt with John he says, “ ‘Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. She is always starting stuff in this book. She has lied many times for instance when she said, “ ‘I saw Goody Osburn with the devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the devil’ “ (45)! None of those women were part of witchcraft, they just said whatever name came to their head so that other people would get in trouble instead of themselves. Also, she threatened people. She threatened the girls by saying, “ ‘I will come to you in the back of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you’ ” (19).
