In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller the character John Proctor is made to look like a very mysterious and courageous. As a man in the 1600’s he is accused of being a witch and the antichrist. This is during the Salem Witch Trials in Massachusetts. In the story he is brought into a lie that Salem has been bewitched by Satan. This was brought to him by a young woman named Abigail Williams who planned on taking Goody Proctor's position as John Proctor’s wife. Although John is just a farmer in Massachusetts in these times one lie can become havoc for a town. I am trying to compare Arthur Miller's experiences in real life with his creation The Crucible.

The United States Government was cracking down on Communism in the United States. Arthur was being accused of communism. During the trials he many would not give the names of others involved. One of those who was in the same boat was Mr, Arthur Miller. He admitted to his left wing activities. But he would not say the name of the rest of the people involved. And made his career bumpy and almost destroyed it. Much like John Proctor in the Screenwrite The Crucible . In one of the scenes in Act IV John is told that either way if he confesses to witchcraft or not he will lose something his dignity and wife if he confesses or his life if he does not. To safe his wife and end the Salem Witch Trials. John Proctor did not confess and died at the rope. “ The final drumroll crashes, then heightens violently. Hale weeps in frantic prayer, and the new sun is frantic prayer, and the new sun is pouring in upon her face, and the drums rattle like bones in the morning air.” This is what I believe Arthur Miller was trying to say it was the end of his life as a screenwriter.
