Arthur Miller’s book; The Crucible, takes place in 17th century theocratic New England Salem Massachusetts in a small community when mass hysteria was widely spread amongst the citizens as they thought they were being afflicted by witches and were accusing one another of committing witchcraft causing people to have their lives taken and or changed One person who had undergone a transformation in their life in this story as the result of the hysteria and madness was a local farmer named John Proctor. John Proctor’s character transformed as the story progressed evolved in the aspect of the relation to his wife Elizabeth, turning the relation with Elizabeth from one of mistrust and coldness to trust and warmth in the end.

Proctor’s relationship still is very mistrustful as when Proctor is talking to his wife, Proctor mentions that he was alone with Abigail williams; the woman he cheated with “for a moment’ when he was going to town to the court on his wife’s behalf. Elizabeth calls Proctor out on this immediately and begins questioning him and as he tries to defend himself it is said that Elizabeth “has suddenly lost all faith in him” and speaks very ill of his morals (page 54) meaning that Elizabeth still absolutely no trust in him. John proctor is angered by Elizabeth’s lack of forgiveness and says “Spare me! You forget nothin’ and forgive nothin’. Learn charity, woman. I have gone tiptoe in this house all seven month since she is gone. I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you (on pages 53-54.)”. John Proctor’s relationship to his wife is still cold as when John Proctor is asking for forgiveness and to make things right on page (54-55) every attempt that he makes is met with a very negative response and a John Proctor releasing his anger tells Elizabeth that “your justice would freeze beer” (page 55) -meaning that Proctor feels she is being very cold towards him with her judgement in the form of
