The Strength of Lies Lies used to manipulate an entire community and send 19 people to the gallows. In Salem massachusetts, a group of young girls spread these lies after being found dancing in the forest in Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” which shows the true manipulative power of lies, proving that even a small white lie, is all it takes to ruin an entire town.
The smallest of lies can ruin the strongest of things, a town, city, or even a holy matrimony. John Proctors marriage is damaged by his past affair and it comes back to haunt him as Abigail comes back for his unholy love. She tries to convince him to come back to her by trying to manipulate him. “You loved me, and whatever sin it is you love me yet” (Miller 1033). Proctor pushes her away and ends up lying to his wife, this later gets him caught for lechery, and then for being the devil's man.

Mary Warren ends up accusing John Proctor of being “the devil's man”. The town goes into uproar as most men think he is indeed guilty of the accusations, and some, such as Hale, start to realise that the accusations are fake. “I denounce these proceedings, I quit this court!” (1087) With as many people who have already hung, even the law understands that they cannot stop, or the town will go into uproar over all of the false hangings.
The power of lies can be used to manipulate, bring down an entire village, and even kill, as seen in “The Crucible”. The girls use lies to save their own skin and push others down in their place, and even proctor lies to try to save his struggling marriage.
