The passage takes place towards the end of the play, Proctor refuses to admit to witchcraft and cries as he tears the confession paper. Looking at the passage we can also see how his wife is actually telling him to stop crying, further supporting the notion that crying is seen as a weakness. Elizabeth is actually taking on the more traditional masculine role by telling her husband to stop crying and be strong, this makes it clear that proctor is not being portrayed as the typical strong male character.
