“With great power comes great responsibility” – Ben Parker. If the people in The Crucible had heard this quote and taken it to heart none of the drama that happened would have occurred. Instead the people with the power decided to be prideful instead of using their power to stop the chaos. Two discernable characters demonstrating how to not use power are, Reverend Paris and Judge Danforth. Also one that may not instantly come to mind, and may not just be one person is the group of girls. What caused these people to incorrectly use their power? Was it: Pride, a want to keep their power, or were they frightened to use the power they had? I think for every single character listed, it’s a combination of all three. In my mind Reverend Paris, was power thirsty and didn’t want to risk losing his power. He argued that the town didn’t like him. He also claimed he was not going to be run out of town like the other religious leaders. I think that in Paris' mind he didn’t want to admit that he was wrong in order to keep the power he had. If the Reverend had admitted to his faults and helped stopped the madness he would’ve gained respect from the people for being honest which would help secure power for him as the religious leader. At one point Danforth listed all of his accomplishment or “stats” as a judge. That shows his ego, and generally those with a big ego have a tendency to deny the fact they could be in the wrong. The Judge continues to be in denial later on in the play. Then he basically says, he’s already sentenced people to death, and he can’t go back and change their sentences. Clearly he can’t do this because that would mean he was wrong. In turn, his unwillingness to admit that he was wrong lead to death all because of his pride.
