Standing up for what’s right Standing up for what you believe in is a very important quality, this is highlighted by many of the characters in Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Three characters who did this were John Proctor, Giles Corey, and Reverend Hale. John proctor did what he believed was right and he never tried to be something he is not. Giles Corey stood up for his family and friend, even when he is faced with being stoned. Reverend Hale believed that everyone was innocent until proven guilty, he also stood up for every person on trial. Doing what you believe in or doing what is right is an integral part of being a good person. John Proctor was and innocent and honest man who did everything he could to protect elizabeth and his children. In the middle of the play, John does everything in his power to keep Elizabeth from being taken away and hung. In act three John goes to the jury with Mary Warren and a piece of paper. He does this because on this piece of paper is a list of townspeople to prove that Elizabeth is innocent of witchcraft. “I cannot mount the gibbet like a saint. It is a fraud. I am not that man. “You cannot arrest me for contempt of a hearing.” At the beginning of act three, Giles rushes to the the courthouse to present evidence, hopefully to prevent his wife’s hanging. When Giles was threatened and tortured, he still would not say yes or no to any charges. Giles Corey was pressed to death. Huge, heavy stones were laid upon his chest until he died. This tortuous procedure was used on Giles to make him answer the charges against him and to force him to name others for the court.
