In my opinion, an Outsider is someone that may not fit in with a group of people as much as other people do. Outsiders may not feel as comfortable with a group of people because of the way they treat them or how they feel around those certain people.
I think Ms. Hinton referred to the Greasers as Outsiders because they don’t fit in with the Socs. Most people, like the Greasers may not care that they aren’t a Socs and they may never be one, but that they’d rather be a Greaser because that’s what they are most comfortable being. Most people are too worried about hanging out with the “cool people” that they’d lose the friends that they have now and are most comfortable with to just hang out with a more “known” crowd.
