In the novel, The Day of the LOCUST, by Nathaniel West you find a summed-up version of what Hollywood consists of. It is completely accurate as to what one envisions Hollywood is like if you have never been there. The short novel itself was like a lullaby putting me to sleep each time It was read, which resulted in taking me a while to finish. The story was all over the place and very confusing. The narrator jumped around when talking about all of the characters, it was hard to keep track of which one he was talking about. Despite the novel being boring in its execution of telling the story, from the understandable parts in the novel there were some interesting themes. Each of the characters represent each phase and lifestyle in Hollywood. The main character Tod Brackett symbolizes broken dreams of those who come to Hollywood. After leaving the Yale School of Fine Arts, where he was studying painting, he moved to Hollywood expecting paradise. He had envisioned that Hollywood was a place you go to make your dreams come true. Having this in mind, he came to take a set designing job with National Films in Hollywood. Todd served as an outsider’s perspective to everything that was going on. He witnessed how Hollywood has not offered some people the dream they expected. Like most of the people who go to Hollywood in hopes to jump start their career, Faye hoped to get a break to jumpstart hers. Faye has hopes and dreams to become a performer. She is a character who really spices up the novel and makes things a little interesting. She is not a very emotional person and lacks showing affection. She puts up a barrier between herself and those around her, which makes her appear as though she is empty inside and unable to connect to anyone. Her beauty captivated the attention of anyone who laid their eyes upon her, which would help her in her career as a performer if her dream had come
