The Death Bed Scenario

For this assignment, I chose to pose the Death Bed scenario to my roommate with the hopes of getting her to engage in philosophical dialogue with me. This assignment challenged her to take a step back from life and examine her own thoughts, revealing her most deeply held convictions on how to live a worthwhile life. After explaining the scenario to her, the three most fundamental beliefs she came up with were: pursue what makes you happy no matter what, be open-minded and kind, and don’t worry about what others think of you. Her reasoning behind each conviction took our conversation into deep philosophical talk.

She believes that being open-minded will benefit you in the long run because it keeps you from judging others and easily approachable by others. Being open-minded will allow one to meet lots of different kinds of people, teaching you about diversity and making you a more adaptable and tolerant person. This makes you a more understanding person, and makes your life more interesting. The idea of being open-minded also implies the idea of being kind as well. Also, if sacrificing loved ones in order to pursue your happiness was to occur, would that still make someone happy? My roommate’s response to this was to think about the happiness now, not future happiness. There is no point in having money and living in a nice house if you are miserable. Think about being happy in the moment, not planning for the next 30 years of your life. Also, family and friends are not important for everyone, so it depends on the person when it comes to sacrificing loved ones. Some people wouldn’t think twice about leaving their families, which would make them obligated to follow the path to their happiness. However, leaving family for some people could be miserable therefore they wouldn’t do it because it wouldn’t be making them
