The Deluge In One Hundred Years of Solitude, a horrendous torrent of rain that soon turns into a great flood causes havoc in Macondo. The flood that occurs in Macondo is an allusion to the Great Flood that occurred in the Bible. In the Bible, the inhabitants of Earth have become wicked and evil and God was disappointed in those who have acted in such a way. So God decided to create a flood that will kill everything except those who He has chosen to let live. So the winners were Noah and his family. They were told by God to create an ark so they could survive the flood and start humanity once again. Likewise, those inhabiting Macondo will be forced to survive the test of the flood that only those chosen will live. The flood continues for about five years and at the end of that, we see that the city of Macondo has been destroyed and most of its residents gone. So just like in the Bible, the “wicked and evil” have been wiped out. The group of people that we are referring to was the banana company. They have caused death, dismay, and destruction among the once peaceful community of Macondo. They have acted in a way that they seem to have preceded God and were making their own rules and decided whether the Macondo workers should live or not. Now because of the rain, the banana company are gone and with them all the advanced technology that was brought into Macondo. Anything that was technologically advanced was wiped out and now the town has been reverted back to its own times
